The Owensboro Symphony’s Strings Attached program was designed to introduce string playing to students in grades 4 or 5 in the Owensboro Public Schools and Daviess County Schools – the year prior to their opportunity to begin playing in their school orchestra program. Each classroom receives a one-hour session with instructor Carrie Olsen on two consecutive days.
The program is totally hands-on as each child has their own violin to play. They learn the parts of the instrument, the two ways string instruments produce sounds (plucking and bowing), the names of the strings, as well as how to play together as a group.
“In 2015-2016, Strings Attached was presented in 15 of the 17 local elementary schools. The program as had a positive influence on participation in school orchestra programs,” said Greg Olson, Coordinator of Youth and Education Programs.
