US Bank Home Mortgage is the proud sponsor of the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra's annual Concert on the Lawn Sunday, Aug. 19, at Kentucky Wesleyan College. The free concert will feature Retromadness: The Music of the Beatles, featuring The Rewinders.
Family activities and children's games will kick off the Concert on the Lawn at 3 p.m. Picnicking begins at 5 p.m. The concert starts at 7 p.m.
The table-decorating contest, which was a big success last year, will return this year as well. The winner gets to perform with the OSO in the final selection of the evening!
One of the all-time greatest concertos will be featured with local favorite Diane Earle at the piano along with the exuberant 8th Symphony by Dvorak and Weber's dazzling Oberon Overture.
OSO SEPTEMBER LISTENING GUIDE
WEBER-OBERON OVERTURE
There are many great recordings of the Oberon Overture by classic conductors like Toscannini and others, but my favorite of the older recordings is by Mengeberg and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam or a more recent one by the Statskapelle Dresden.
GRIEG-PIANO CONCERTO
The Van Cliburn recording of this work is unusual but interesting, but my favorite is the one with Murray Perahia and Colin Davis.
DVORAK-SYMPHONY #8
The Czech recordings available of this piece are all great, especially that by Vaclav Neuman. My other favorite is by Colin Davis.
Almost all of these recordings can be found at Itunes and you can download them on to either your computer or Ipod (if you are a computer person, that is!).
The University of Kentucky Opera Theater, one of the finest regional opera companies around, will perform some of the most familiar and tuneful music ever written along with Owensboro's own Symphony Chorus and the OSO.
A Holiday tradition that will help you "get in the spirit of the season" with traditional, popular and light classical music featuring the wonderful voices of the Owensboro Symphony Chorus, Center Chorus and the superb Owensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra.
Violin sensation Alison Dalton, formerly with the New York Philharmonic, is a veteran member of the first violin section of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Dalton will dazzle you with her rendition of The Four Seasons in a program that also features Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony. Also appearing at this concert is Mihail Agafita, one of Europe's most talented young conductors.
American music from John Williams's Cowboys Overture and Russell Peck's Upward Stream, with premier saxophone soloist James Houlik, will be followed by Pictures at an Exhibition, one of the "greatest hits" of orchestral music.
Our grand finale showcases the talents of the OSO in magical music by Stravinsky, Respighi, and Mussorgsky as well as one the nation's top guitarists, Jason Vieaux, performing Fantasia para un gentilhombre by Rodrigo.
