OWENSBORO – The Owensboro Symphony 2nd St Big Band is celebrating Independence Day on the road with two performances in the region. On Thursday, July 4th, the Big Band will play for The City of Elizabethtown’s Founders Day Celebration at Freeman Lake Park, 140 Freeman Lake Park Rd. in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. This will be the third consecutive year that the Big Band has been asked to play a part in this free community concert. On Saturday, July 6th, the Big Band will return closer to home and play at a new venue The Hangar at Arrowhead Acres Farm in Cloverport, Kentucky. Both events are free of charge and open to the community.
The Owensboro Symphony 2nd St Big Band is comprised of some of the finest jazz musicians in the area and will bring their flavor of musicality in a show celebrating Independence Day. The Big Band will play everything from Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra to Bruno Mars and Portugal the Man. The group will also perform a musical salute to active and veteran military members and other patriotic themed selections.
“I’ve been playing music for a very long time and there’s really nothing else that compares to the sound and energy of a live big band,” said Big Band pianist, Collin MacQuarrie. “Our set list is an amazing blend of classic and current that will have people of all ages engaged. I’m really looking forward to these performances because it gives the Big Band a chance to get out in our extended community to show them what Owensboro has to offer.”
Both concerts will have food vendors and kids activities starting earlier in the afternoon. Each concert will start at 7:30 p.m. local time and will conclude with fireworks set to live music. Both concerts will also feature Gold Star mother, Cathy Mullins, as a featured vocalist on the Star Spangled Banner and My Old Kentucky Home.
“I am humbled and honored to be involved in any event that celebrates our nation’s freedoms,” said Mullins. “And to be able to perform with a group like the Owensboro Symphony 2nd St Big Band for communities outside the Owensboro area, that is very special for me. Independence Day is so important to my family and me, and I am excited to take part in the celebrations in both Elizabethtown and Cloverport.”
